What is Method Underground?

Method Underground 2024 is the premiere bouldering competition in the Northeast consisting of a Citizens Comp, Youth Comp, and Open Comp scheduled for Saturday, April 13.

The Citizens Comp is comprised of multiple categories from beginner to advanced which is suitable for climbers of all levels. With the support of our generous sponsors, Method will award the top 3 spots in each category (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) for both male (plus non-binary) and female (plus non-binary) with prize packages retailing up to $300.

The Youth Comp will be separated into Youth D/C and Youth B/A/Jr for male (and non-binary) and female (and non-binary).

The Open category will include some of the best climbers around who will be vying for a part of a $10,000 cash purse! The MU Open finals is a spectacle you don’t want to miss.

Important Information

MU 2024 event day: Saturday, April 13

Wave 1 -Open and Youth Only: Registration opens at 9am

Wave 2- Citizens: Registration opens at 1pm

Open Finals: ISO begins at 6pm; climbing at 7pm

Citizens and Youth: If purchased in advance, entry fee is $60 for nonmembers and $50 for members.  After April 8, entry fee is $70 for nonmembers and $60 for members.

Open: If purchased in advance, entry fee is $65.  After April 8th, entry fee is $75.

Free admission for spectators for the finals.

Competition Format

  • Open Category –
    • Qualifier Round – The format for the open category will be modified Redpoint with judges.
    • Finals Round – Finals will be in Onsight format.  The top six (6) qualifiers in each of the male (plus non-binary) and female (plus non-binary) categories will advance to the Finals.  Consisting of four (4) boulders for men and women.
  • Other Categories (Citizens, Youth) – The format for the other categories will be Redpoint with only tops.
    • We will again use the self-scoring system using an honor system (see above).
    • The top 5 climbs will count toward your score.

Competition Day Itinerary

Wave 1 – Open and Youth Categories:

  • Registration begins 9am
  • Rules meeting at 9:50am
  • Climbing from 10am – 12:30pm

Wave 2 – Citizens Category:

  • Registration begins 1pm
  • Rules meeting at 1:50pm
  • Climbing from 2pm – 4:30pm

change-over from 5pm – 7pm

Open Finals:

  • ISO begins at 6pm
  • Finalist introductions at 7pm
  • Finals previews 7pm – 7:13pm
  • Climbing 7:15pm – 9pm

Awards Ceremony at 9:15pm

Prizes

  • Open
    • Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three (3) finishers of each of the male (plus non-binary) and female (plus non-binary) categories: First Place – $2500; Second Place – $1500; Third Place – $1000
  • Citizens Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced, Youth (9-11) and Youth (12-14)
    • Over $8000 of prizes for the citizen’s competition from Method and sponsors. 
    • Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers in each category. 
    • There will be no cash prizes for these categories.
