Just the FAQs

Do I need to make a reservation?

No, just come on in during business hours and we’ll help you get started.  Save yourself some time by signing the waiver and video orientation acknowledgement online before you arrive.

Can I see a virtual tour?

Yes!  Visit here.

Who needs to sign a waiver?

Everyone, even if you aren’t climbing. You will also need to sign the orientation video acknowledgement form.  Click below to fill both out before you arrive to the gym.

What do I need to start?

Just some comfortable athletic clothes and an adventurous attitude; climbing shoes are available to rent if needed as street shoes are not permitted on our walls.

Do you have an age limit?

Yes, the minimum age to participate is 7.  Additionally, if you’re bringing a child under the age of 14, they must be supervised at all times:

  • All children between the ages of 10-13 must be supervised by an adult at a 2:1 – child to adult – ratio.
  • Children under 10 years old must be directly supervised (within arm’s length) by an adult at a 1:1: – child to adult – ratio.
  • If you bring more than one child, please plan accordingly.
Do I need a partner or can I climb by myself?

If you are rope climbing, it’s always advised to climb with a partner, but we do have 8 auto belays in the roping area (which allow you to climb without a belay partner).  Bouldering is done without a partner or ropes.

What is Bouldering and is it hard?

Bouldering is a style of climbing that is generally done on shorter walls (less than 20 feet tall) without the use of harnesses or ropes.  It’s as challenging or easy as you want it to be, and our “problems” are color coded to help you identify its level of difficulty.

I usually climb at the Cliffs in LIC, and this is a nice gym. But the routes seemed more catered to someone who does competitions. The majority of the routes have volumes, dynos, or are super reachy, which can be kinda discouraging for someone new. There arent actually a lot of routes for beginners either. And I havent seen a crimpy-techy route, which is something I like. If the routes werent so spaced out and competition-style, there'd be more routes available to everyone. There's actually a lot of black space on the walls that could fit a beginner route or a crimpy route, or something.

I'm a 5 ft 3 experienced climber based in the UK, climbing up to V5. I visited here once on my way to Newark airport. The good:- good cafe- friendly staff- boulder problems are not cramped together- range of training tools, including a Moonboard and Kilterboard- a short walk from Newark Broad Street station- not busy when we came (on a weekday afternoon)- good value: $15 dropin on a weekday afternoon- a bunch of really nice problems by a guest setter. The bad:- each bouldering circuit spans 3 grades e.g. V4-V6, which IMO is overly wide. There was a lot of inconsistency in difficulty. In my view circuits spanning 2 grades e.g. V4-V5 are preferable and encourage more consistency.- problems were very, very spaced out, so there were surprisingly few problems in the wall. Unless they are resetting almost daily I cannot imagine that there is enough to do here to justify coming frequently.- many problems were reachy and thus harder for the short. IMO short beginner climbers would find at most a dozen boulder problems that they could do, whereas a tall guy would have twice that many.- lockers are surprisingly small- changing rooms have showers, but do not provide towels.Edited to add: I see there is a defensive response from the gym below. In one case a gym coach was watching as I tried the reachy move and he assured me that my beta was correct - the move simply IS reachy. Moreover, I asked about who set what and was told that they alleged female setter had not set a single problem that was in the gym on the day we visited. If you respond to customer feedback with this kind of attitude then you are never going to learn from or correct your mistakes. 4 stars downgraded to 3 *slow clap*.

Great gym with a solid lifting area. The only con for me is even the easier problems are super reachy (I’m short :/) and as beginner it’s really discouraging. Sometimes I’ll pause my membership for a month to go to GV to get my confidence up and not have to basically jump/use huge momentum during every climb. I just end up plateauing a lot.

A truly phenomenal bouldering gym. I love entering through the art deco foyer - perhaps the best entrance to any gym anywhere? The gym itself is a unique space. The staff are friendly and routes are frequently reset. There are lots of things going on such as yoga classes, on-sight competitions, community route setting. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Arguably one of my favorite climbing gyms in this area. The coffee shop is AMAZING, hands down the best coffee I've had since I moved from here from WA state. Tons of boulders that are reset every week to keep things fresh. I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often.

Have not tried their memberships yet, but came to see the gym as I'm considering moving to Newark. The place is pretty awesome, they do a great job with the tour, and I'm very excited to join if I move nearby! They have an emphasis on community events and specialize in bouldering, although they have some tall wall as well. They also offer fitness classes like capoeira, which is really interesting!

Getting started with rock climbing was pretty scary for me, after about 7-8 months I feel quite good about it all because of the staff and community there. They are really helping and they are amazing people.Apart from the climbing walls, there is a gym and other fitness classes including yoga and capoeira. All the instructors there are kind and enthusiastic. Thumbs up to all the team.Give it a shot if you want to

Great climbing gym. Huge space, large comp wall, comprehensive gear in the training area. The routes set are very interesting although each route is set fairly apart so the wall can feel a bit sparse in areas, and you don't have as many routes to do as you think you do given the large space.

My son is in their Power Pullers program and really likes it. He has grown in confidence and resilience since he joined the program. He enjoys it so much that he wanted to celebrate his birthday at the gym. We asked Jeremy if it was possible to host a birthday party at the gym, and he was awesome from the planning stages all the way to the end. Jeremy is an amazing instructor, all the children had fun, regardless of their ability level. They left happy and exhausted, begging their parents to come back. The parents were impressed by the facility and the staff and plan to come back on their own. Thank you Method Climbing Gym for making it a very special day!

Great people in the gym. Extremely helpful in your progression. Routes have a great range of difficulty; also helpful that the wall is not completely packed with routes so they are entirely overlapped. Routes get changed regularly and you will never be bored. Great gym overall for cleanliness and maintenance. Only thing criticism is that I wish is opened earlier in the morning so people can go before work hours.

Method is a great climbing gym! I’ve been here maybe a dozen times with friends who are more serious climbers than I am, but always feel like there’s plenty of V0/V1 (the easiest ratings) for me to try. It’s mainly bouldering with some but limited top roping. This gym also has a great culture! The people who work here are super nice and the gym regularly hosts onsite competitions! There’s also a women’s meet up, an LGBTQ+ meet up, etc.Cannot recommend this gym more!

I have seen strangers become friends, newbies become crushers, warlocks multiclass into rogues, all in Method. Never have I seen a stronger community or a stronger team of people making dreams come true. The facility is incredibly well thought out. The management is kind and giving. The climbers are diverse and the events are actually fun.Imagine if a bunch of actual climbers ran a gym- thats Method. Come here to crush coffee and boulders and make a friend, stay to become part of the community.

Friendly reminder to go home, your family and pets miss you, because when you go to method, you will usually stay too late. The staff are super chill and helpful, the boulders are interesting and unique, and the gym area is spacious. For being a gym in the cellar, the layout is well thought out, and it never feels claustrophobic.Method hosts lots of cool events, and there is usually a new set of boulders each week. Happy to be a member here.

I have tried to get into a regular workout for years, but to be perfectly honest, gyms are usually BORING to me. Not this one though. I come in three times a week, and it feels like a new playground every time. I've only been a member for about a month, but I feel super fit already, and really proud of how I'm beginning to tone. I also took my first yoga class with them in 20 years and I've never felt so internally balanced. And the best part is that the community here is an absolute treasure. I've never felt judged for falling off a wall or putting a harness on wrong by accident, the staff is so nice and helpful when you're figuring things out, and every month, they host multiple events in their cafe and the gym downstairs. Also, this is the only cafe in the area that stays open late, which is sometimes absolutely crucial for my own creative process. I feel truly thankful that I found this wonderful spot after moving to Newark. I hope to keep visiting for many, many moons. :)

We feel so lucky to have this place! It has such a wonderful sense of community, and our kids (11 and 8) feel at home here. Our 8 year old son had his birthday party here, which was AMAZING. They had creative climbing- based games for the kids and they even put goody bags at the top of the climbs. They were so patient and kind with each of the kids - I can’t imagine a better place for a birthday party!!!

Great climbing gym with owners that emphasize community. The boulders are well set with a nice mix of styles (competition, "finger-y", slab, steep, etc.). They set the walls in sections so there's enough time to work on projects but there's also a new set every other week.Rope climbs are excellent with many auto-belays if you train alone. They're short (35-40 feet) but are very technical and thoughtfully set.The resistance training, campus board, selection of hangboards, treadwall, spray wall, moonboard, and tension board are great for training at all levels.

one of the best gyms out in the tri-state area. community's at 110%. i <3 the staff. location is accessible with public transportation with NJ transit & broad st station. parking is so near. there is climbing gear available in their cafe which is also incredible.the entire gym is very well-maintained. the route setters switch out the climbs mindfully and consistently, providing every level of climber with a good variety.would recommend checking their instagram @methodclimb for updates on their hours, offers, their fitness classes (TRX, capoeira, yoga, adult training program, etc.) and their maaaaany events such as shoe demos, vendor markets, mixers, LGBTQ+ meetups, ladies' night, college night, monthly mock competitions, and more. super easy to get to know other climbers & find your people.some of their events offer discounts for day passes as well, so those new to climbing can experience both the community and climbs with great valueas a new woman climber, the sport was initially intimidating but within method, there is a strong community of women climbers to look up to that personally made the sport all the more inspiring and fun.for first timers or long-time members, method's perfect. always a good time

One of my favorite climbing gyms. There’s a ton of bouldering options and the setting style is technique based and fun. I’ve been to a lot of gyms where I felt like some of the climbs were hard simply because they were made to be super reachy, so it’s nice to actually have a challenging climb that I can do with technique rather than just not being tall enough haha. They also have lots of classes that both members and visitors can enjoy and a top roping section as well. I like to come in for a session with friends and then hang out in their cafe after where I can get food and coffee or tea

I absolutely love this place! Joined after Christmas and they are really legit. Some gyms are rock climbing wall gyms where there is the lead that holds onto you so you don’t fall off the wall.
